Hazel Grove MP William Wragg has apologised over his involvement in a sexting scandal that targeted fellow MPs. It is reported that police are investigating after politicians were targeted and sent flirtatious messages.

Mr Wragg, who is chairman of a Commons select committee, reportedly toldthe Times that he had provided the personal phone numbers of colleagues to a man who he had been chatting to on gay dating website app Grindr.

The 36-year-old openly gay Conservative MP, who has been the Member of Parliament since 2015, told the newspaper he was “mortified” about the incident.

"They had compromising things on me," he told The Times. "They wouldn’t leave me alone. They would request for people. I gave them some numbers, not all of them. I told him to block. He’s manipulated me and now I’ve hurt other people."

MP William Wragg is at the centre of controversy after he admitted sharing colleagues' personal phone numbers with someone he met on a dating app.

He was first elected to parliament as the Conservative member for Hazel Grove, Greater Manchester, in 2015 when he was just 27.

Now 36, he has already announced his intention to stand down as an MP after the next general election, saying his "misspent youth was in politics and I reflect I would like a break from it".

On Tuesday evening, Mr Wragg became the 18th independent MP in the Commons after he "voluntarily" gave up the Tory Party whipfollowing his role in the scandal.

Before entering Westminster, Mr Wragg served as a local councillor on Stockport Council between 2011 and 2015 and worked as a primary school teacher.

He took his seat from the Liberal Democrats and, in doing so, became the first Conservative MP to represent the constituency since 1997.

British police on Thursday opened an enquiry following a complaint by an MP who was amongst a dozen men targeted in a honeytrap sex-messaging scandal.

Police said they had opened the inquiry after the men were allegedly targeted by seductive message messages that often included explicit photographs.

Conservative MP William Wragg admitted to The Times newspaper that he was responsible for leaking the telephone numbers of the men targeted.

The 36-year-old told The Times that he had given in to the demands made by a user of a gay dating app to whom he had sent intimate photographs.

The 36-year-old told the BBC: "My stomach just dropped.

"When I found out some of the things that had been going on, I just felt enormous guilt, immense remorse."

A senior Conservative MP says he is "mortified" after admitting his involvement in a honeytrap sexting scandal targeting a minister and fellow MPs.

William Wragg, told The Times he handed over the personal phone numbers of colleagues to a human he met on Grindr, a gay dating app.

The chairman of a Commons select committee and vice-chairman of the 1922 committee admitted he shared the details after sending intimate pictures of himself to the user.

Wragg, 36, said he was “scared” that the man “had compromising things on me”.

The colleagues — which included several MPs, members of their staff and a political journalist — were sent unsolicited flirtatious messages from senders calling themselves “Charlie” or “Abi”.

It is understood two MPs responded by sending an explicit picture of themselves.

The scandal, which has raised concerns over the vulnerability of MPs to cyberattacks, is now the subject of an investigation by Leicestershire police, which has received a complaint of “malicious communications
