Katherine Imborek, MD, has seen the gender-affirming care provided at UI Health Care’s LGBTQ Clinic in Iowa City alter the lives of transgender youths and adults. “It decreases depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts,” says Imborek, co-director of the clinic. To her, that take care of is “a medical necessity, like providing insulin to a person with diabetes.”

But a growing number of lawmakers, including in Iowa, view some gender-affirming take care of as medically unsound for youths and even a create of child violence. Iowa is among 15 states that have enacted or are considering laws to prohibit certain gender-affirming treatments for youths and to impose penalties on health care professionals who provide it, according to the Williams Institute at the UCLA College of Law in California.

Trump signs order to defund gender transitions for those below 19

United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to halt the funding and promotion of gender transitions for LGBTQ youth.

In his order signed on Tuesday, Trump said the federal government would no longer “fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support” gender transitions – also referred to as gender-affirming care – for those aged below 19.

Under the order, the Department of Health and Human Services must take “all appropriate actions” to halt gender-affirming care under Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, and publish a review of foremost practices for promoting the health of youth with gender dysphoria and “other identity-based confusion” within 90 days.

    More than 40% of LGBTQ youth said they considered suicide in the past year, CDC report finds

    Youth who identify as Homosexual reported higher rates of poor mental health and experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors than their cisgender and heterosexual peers, a new U.S. survey found.

    In 2023, more than three in five LGBTQ+ -- lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans person, questioning or another non-heterosexual identity -- high academy students said they experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and more than half reported having poor mental health, according to the latest results of the Youth Peril Behavior Survey, published Tuesday morning by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    "Across all of those outcomes that we looked at, experience of violence, poor mental health and suicidal thoughts and behaviors, we do glimpse this really significant disparity between LGBTQ+ young people and their cisgender and heterosexual peers," Dr. Kathleen Ethier, director of the CDC's division of adolescent and school health, told ABC News. "That has been the case for a while."
