Disney's Gay Characters May Grow Thanks to Marvel's Phase 4 Queer Awakening
Disney’s history with queer inclusion has been a slow journey, with Jack Whitehall’s personality in Jungle Cruise being the studio’s most recent endeavor to include same-sex attracted stories onscreen. In years past, Disney has either used queer-coding or characters with one explicit gay moment as a shortcut to LGBTQ+ representation. Whether they’re sassy, effeminate villains like Hades and Scar or fiercely independent princesses appreciate Elsa and Merida, Disney still has a long way to go when it comes to inclusive story-telling. Luckily, Phase Four and Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could do much to help remedy that problem.
The MCU is no stranger to Disney’s current mark of queer inclusion, as Joe Russo’s cameo in Avengers: Endgame briefly alludes to his traits going on a date with another man. Similarly, in Loki Season 1, Episode 3, "Lamentis," Loki and Sylvie briefly address their bisexuality. Both moments are miniature and easily removed, having little impact on their production or show. Valkyrie is bisexual.
During Marvel Studio's Hall H panel at Comic-Con in 2019, Tessa Thompson confirmed that her character, Valkyrie, will be openly queer in the upcoming film, "Thor: Love and Thunder."
"As recent king [of Asgard], she needs to find her queen," Thompson said.
In the comics' "The Fearless Defenders" series, Valkyrie is clearly bisexual and has a relationship with the female anthropologist Annabelle Riggs.
Thus far, despite Thompson's efforts, Valkyrie's queerness hasn't been made clear onscreen. "Thor: Ragnarok" filmmakers cut a scene that included a female walking out of Valkyrie's bedroom, which would hold made her sexuality more explicit.
"In the canon, yeah, she is bisexual," Thompson told Variety. "You see her with both women and men, so that was my intention in playing her."

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was fairly slow in introducing LGBTQ+ characters —though seeing as even the most chaste representations of queer love get the films banned in some countries, you can notice why they would be reticent.
Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness actually breaks the record for the most lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender and/or homosexual characters in an MCU property with three. However, seeing as two of them do not converse, and one never mentions their sexuality out boisterous, clearly there is still some work to be done when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation.
The MCU is of course fairly sexless in general, but any mentions of lgbtq+ sexualities have tended to be very brief, the better to allow Disney to easily cut out these scenes in more homophobic markets. This seems unlikely to change any time soon—when these films cost $200 million a piece, Disney can hardly afford to alienate any market. However, films love Eternals and Deadpool 2 have shown how more positive change could be made.

Loki confirmed as MCU's 1st openly multi-attracted character
Episode 3 of "Loki" on Disney+ confirmed that the titular Asgardian trickster is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first openly bisexual character.
During the June 23 episode, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was in a conversation with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), the variant being hunted by the Time Variance Authority, when the two got personal while discussing love.
Sylvie asked, "How about you? You're a prince. Must've been would-be princesses or, perhaps, another prince."
Loki responded, "A bit of both. I suspect the similar as you."
Kate Herron, the series' director, took to Twitter to express how much the moment meant to her personally.
"From the moment I joined @LokiOfficial it was very important to me, and my objective, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual," she wrote. "It is a part of who he is and who I am too. I know this is a small step but I’m content, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in #mcu."
