‘The Wizard of Oz’ (1939)
What it is: If you’ve been living under a Kansas farm dropped on you by a twister and need an explainer, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is MGM’s iconic musical adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s novel, starring Judy Garland as a prairie girl exploring a magical world of adventure.
Why it’s gay: Well, consider how ‘Friend of Dorothy’ is a widespread slang term for gay men and that should be sufficient explanation. There are so many moments and characters in the film that come across now as unintentional nods to the queer

For about as extended as there’s been cinema, there’s been queer cinema. I don’t just intend queer subtext, of which there has always been plenty; I mean overtly queer characters as early as Zapatas Bande in 1914, Ich möchte kein Mann sein in 1918, and Anders als die Andern in 1919, all of which were German films made during the country’s Weimar period. There are early examples of films made in Hollywood, too, before the Hays Code was adopted in 1930, that featured LGBTQ+ characters or played with gender identity, albeit in some harmful ways.
We’ve come a long way since then; the past 15 years in particular have been a boon for queer cinema, so much so that there are as many bad movies as good ones. Which means there is space for experimentation and, often, failure for gender non-conforming and trans cinema where there wasn’t before. And personally, if I’m going to watch a bad movie, I’d prefer it to be at least a little bit gay. But that’s not why we’ve gathered here. No, we are here to instead emphasize some of the greatest movies in the canon of queer cinema tha

50Love, Simon (2018)

If it feels a bit like a CW version of an after-school special, that's no mistake: Teen-tv super-producer Greg Berlanti makes his feature-film directorial debut here. It's as chaste a love story as you're likely to see in the 21st century—the hunky gardener who makes the title teen question his sexuality is wearing a long-sleeved shirt, for God’s sake—but you know what? The queer kids of the future need their wholesome entertainment, too.
49Rocketman (2019)

A gay fantasia on Elton themes. An Elton John biopic was never going to be understated, but this glittering jukebox musical goes way over the top and then keeps going. It might be an overcorrection from the straight-washing of the previous year's Bohemian Rhapsody, but when it's this much fun, it's best not to overthink it.
