With ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ C-3PO Is Still a Queer Icon
It’s time for another Star Wars movie, which means more insignificant pandering to LGBTQ audiences — and more disappointment. Two weeks ago, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final installment in the space opera’s third trilogy, debuted to lackluster reviews and watered down a much-anticipated homosexual moment: a brief and underwhelming gay kiss.
In the new film, two unnamed female Resistance soldiers instantly smack lips while nearly lost in a crowd celebrating the defeat of the Final Order’s fleet. It’s all a shame: Director J.J. Abrams already had an iconic lgbtq+ character to work with, and I’m not talking about Resistance leaders Finn and Poe, whose bond Abrams made a bromance (yuck).
I’m talking about C-3PO, a wiry, aging twink droid in love with an old queen, R2-D2. Introduced in the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, in 1977, C-3PO is science fiction’s first great queer traits. He proved that gays are not a monolith and can, in evidence, show up early.

True confession: this was one of the most thrilling interviews I acquire ever done. The exhibition Star Wars: The Magic Of Myth was opened last week by none other than Anthony Daniels, the man who has played C3PO in all of the Star Wars films. The films and their meaning were the id?fixe of my adolescence, and given that I was seven when the original Celebrity Wars was released, C3PO was also probably the first gay character I had seen on film.
I knew even then that the camp protocol droid was considered odd and certainly Daniels’ performance has been joked about ever since. My first memory of this cultural ribbing was a reference to him as a fag robot in a beloved Mad Magazine 1978 spoof Star Bores and any number of more recent piss-takes include a catch on The Simpsons, when the Cylons wrestled those lgbtq+ robots from Actor Wars. (C3PO was beaten to scrap metal.)
So what does the man himself think about these rumours?
That he’s gay? smiles Daniels. Perception is everything. I think people receive confused by the fact that Threepio is sort of fussy, because he likes everything to be right, and that is certainly something I divide. I was here this morning saying -“

When J.J. Abrams said last year that he expected gay characters to play a part in the diversity of the future movies, many fans had hopes he was referring to Poe and Finn.
But in the comments sections on somepieces, many fans expressed confusion: “What about C-3PO? And R2-D2?” Even some writers got in on the joke.
The speculation that C-3PO and R2-D2 were gay is not new, as fans have debated (and joked about) that possibility on message boards for at least a decade. One YouTube user even made a “Brokeback Mountain” parody about the the two droids.
The argument that the droids were lgbtq+ rests on C-3PO’s mannerisms. Because he had the effete affectations stereotypically linked with gay men, he must have been lgbtq+ himself. And because R2 was his constant companion, he must have been C-3PO’s lover.
