MI5 has been named the UK's most gay-friendly employer - but it isn't long since same-sex relationships were considered a threat to national security. How did attitudes change?

"How to spot a possible homo," ran a headline in the folio. Below this, for MI5's benefit, was a list of supposed signifiers of male homosexuality ("a male lover little wiggle", "his tie has the latest knot", "an unnaturally strong warmth for his mother").
The pretext for this unsolicited suggestions - which now seems clearly offensive - was the case of John Vassall, a gay civil servant who spied for the Soviets under threat of blackmail. A queer man, the paper's writer said, was a de facto security risk: "I wouldn't trust him with my secrets."
Fast forward 53 years and the service tops Stonewall's 2016 list of the 400 optimal places to work for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. According to the Times, external, more than 80 of its employees belong to an LGBT staff network.

Mononormativity and Related Normative Bias in the UK Immigration System: The Experience of LGBTIQ+ Asylum Seekers
Introduction
The right of asylum seekers to enter and remain in the United Kingdom depends on laws enforced by a range of Government agencies that make up the British immigration system, including United Kingdom Visas and Immigration, Border Oblige and Immigration Enforcement. People’s experiences of this system are strongly affected by their sexuality; indeed sexuality ‘structures every aspect of immigrant experiences’ (Luibhéid 2004, 227). There are particular challenges when people are basing their claim for asylum on the persecution they have faced due to their sexual orientation. This is highlighted by the fact that between 2016 and 2018 the Home Office refused at least 3,100 asylum claims from LGBTIQ+1 people from countries where consensual lgbtq+ acts are criminalised (Grierson 2019).
