Emma Corrin Was Shocked by How Much ‘Hate’ They Received Coming Out as Non-Binary
Emma Corrin‘s coming-out in 2021 was not without its stumbles.
The actor, who uses they/them pronouns, was recently featured in Vanity Fair’s Hollywood issue alongside other up-and-coming generational talents. In the interview, Corrin discussed how the process of coming out as non-binary in spring 2021 led to difficult revelations about being an openly queer person in Hollywood.
At the time, Corrin publicly changed their pronouns and spoke about wearing a chest binder, but they told Vanity Fair that they didn’t notify their team the announcement was coming.
“I might have [messaged them] over WhatsApp and just said, ‘I’m going to post this,'” Corrin said. “I don’t consider there was any huge discussion about it.”
However, Corrin said, “Naively, maybe, it took me aback how much hate I got for that. It was quite a reality review. But for a lot of people, it did help. Especially around conversation of gender and stuff, it does help a lot of people to see someone living as a nonbinary person in the world. I recognize how much other
Emma Corrin opens up about 'vitriol' over their gender identity: 'Why am I controversial?'

Three years after they announced their preferred use of they and them pronouns, the actor revealed, "The vitriol is worse than I anticipated" in an interview for the June/July issue of Harper's Bazaar, which published online Wednesday.
"Even though we like to think we’re in a progressive society, a lot of what we’re seeing is increasingly a step back," they added.
Corrin, a Cambridge University graduate who broke out in 2020 for portraying Princess Diana in Season 4 of Netflix's "The Crown" and won a Golden Globe for their transformative act, mused about why people might react the way they do.
"People follow me because they’ve watched something I’m in. They reflect I’m one kind of person, and then they’ll see who I actually am and how I present," Corrin said. "I will never understand why. Who are you hurting by being yourself? Why am I controversial?"

The actor, who portrayed the late Princess Diana on season 4 of "The Crown" in 2020, came out the following year as queer and nonbinary and updated their pronouns to they/them in their Instagram bio, told Harper’s BAZAAR for the magazine's June/July 2024 Freedom Issue that "the vitriol is worse than I anticipated."
"Even though we like to believe we're in a progressive society, a lot of what we're seeing is increasingly a step back," they added.
Of some of the comments they acquire on social media, Corrin said it's a discrepancy between people following them because of a role they played and them "thinking I'm one thoughtful of person" before seeing them in real life.
"Who are you hurting by being yourself? Why am I controversial?" they asked. "I think it's apprehension. Absolute fear."
