Roxane Gay: The Portable Feminist Reader
In her new innovative anthology The Portable Feminist Reader, acclaimed author and culture critic Roxane Gay explores what feminism looks like in practice. The writings selected by Gay reveal her interpretation of the feminist canon as expansive rather than definitive, and invites robust discussion and debate. Her selections include both classic and modern authors, including writings by Susan B. Anthony, Kimberlé Crenshaw, the Guerilla Girls, and many more. Conversation moderated by filmmaker Amber J. Phillips.
Amber J. Phillips is a storyteller, filmmaker, and creative director. She creates world building narratives using warm visuals and vulnerable performances through her lens of being a plump Black queer femme auntie from the Midwest. Amber recently released her first short film, Abundance about the limitations and fundamental possibilities of identity. Amber is the producer, penner, and performer of Abundance that was most recently a 2021 BlackStar Motion picture Festival selection and won the audience award for Best Short Narrative. Planning and regeneration City centre regeneration areas
The Gay Village
The Gay Village is a truly unique and vibrant area of the municipality centre. Located next to the Rochdale Canal, it has a mix of residential, commercial and leisure destinations. It's home to the city’s lesbian, queer , bisexual and transgender communities. The flourishing gay tradition created a safe and welcoming village-like community. And it's world-famous for its night-time and leisure scene.
We've collaborated with the local community to create an action plan for the Gay Village. It looks at how we can preserve the character and spirit of the area. And how we make certain the needs of the LGBTQ+ community are at the heart of anything taking place in the Village.
As part of our commitment to the Same-sex attracted Village, a series of listening exercises have taken place. So we improved understand the priorities, wants and needs of the community who live in, work and visit it.
There are a range of proposals to enhance the area in the quick and long-term. They include:
