Back then, Barres was a middle-aged married gentleman with children and a job at Kodak by evening, and a covert “cross-dresser” by late hours eager for acceptance of her genuine self. She initiate it at Rosie’s, a lesbian lock on Monroe Way.
“It was one of the rare places I could be totally me,” said Barres, now a 79-year-old transitioned woman. “I was very, very disguised most of my life. And I was afraid of anybody finding out.”
More than 30 years has passed since those days, and Rosie’s, favor dozens of other gay bars in Rochester and hundreds across the region, has closed. Still, the rush of relief Barres experienced has not left her.
“There was a lot of fear, but excitement at the alike time, and it felt so superb to go someplace and feel that I wasn’t going to be overcome up,” she said. “I wasn’t going to be screamed at or told how sick I was, or things like that, which we were all afraid of.”
For decades, gay bars were among the not many places that gay people could harvest in relative shelter. To their patrons, they were crucial spaces for ruling and socializing with one’s people — and looki

See Gone, but not forgotten
TiLT was a large evening club located in the St. Joseph's Park Neighborhood, with an intriguing, contemporary, aesthetic multi-room layout. Set in an old brick warehouse, there was a central outdoor courtyard, a lounge, and a dance club. Eye candy abounded, with the mod furniture, sheets of effervescent water, trippy videos playing in TVs throughout, and blue-lit DJ stands and bar displays. It was originally opened in 2005 as a primarily LGBTQ+ dance club featuring many of Rochester's notable queenly kings and queens. As of August 2018 the club is closed after fierce backlash against new management's judgment to end its long running flamboyant shows, special events, and focus on LGBT+ inclusivity.

From BBQ to LGBTQ: Culver Road nightclub offers something for everyone
A DJ and a drag queen amble into a bar.
What they saw was overwhelming, and not in a nice way.
Michael Ruger, also known as DJ Mighty Mic, and Dave Chappius, also famous as local drag queen DeeDee Dubois, had worked together for years at Tilt Nightclub on Core Avenue. When the club changed hands and moved its focus away from the LGBTQ community, it left a void. Drag shows establish a temporary home at Photo City Improv, but Ruger and Chappius wanted to find a longer-term solution.
When the two visited the former performance space for Sticky Lips Pit BBQ, they saw walls packed with "everything tacky you could ever think of" — memorabilia, license plates, a neon Syracuse Orange sign. The aesthetic was closer to a TGI Friday's than the polished nightclub they had in mind.
But it did have a grand stage and balcony, a gleaming copper ceiling and eye-catching crystal chandeliers. They could view the potential.
