Are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber Gay? Phil Vischer, Semler Weigh In

VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer has responded to a doubt about the sexual orientation of Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, two characters he created for the Christian children’s exhibit, the former of which he voiced himself.

In a tweet that appears to have been deleted, Twitter user Quinn Smith said, “@philvischer was in Milwaukee at a @relientK concert, and @gracebaldridge suggested that Bob & Larry are gay, can you confirm?”

Vischer replied to Smith’s tweet with one word: “Nope.” From his response, it is unclear whether Vischer was denying that the VeggieTales characters are gay, or if he was simply saying that he couldn’t publicly assert the theory.

Either way, queer Christian musical artist Grace Baldridge, who goes by the stage designate Semler, was not satisfied with Vischer’s answer. Tweeting a screenshot of the interaction between Smith and Vischer, Semler said, “LET THE CARTOON VEGETABLES BE GAY PHIL.”

Semler is currently on tour with Christian band Relient K.

Arthur cartoon slammed by Phil Vischer for its portrayal of gay marriage

A recent portrayal of gay marriage in the children’s exhibit Arthur has led to VeggieTales‘ co-creator Phil Vischer speaking against what he perceives as LGBT voice being forced into new cartoons. Vischer, the co-creator of the Christian cartoon, lamented the state of today’s cartoons while discussing a recent episode of Arthur. In the episode, one of the titular character’s teachers is married to another man, something that Vischer says is “concerning.”

In an interview with The Christian Post, he said “It’s going to show up more and more as the society has decided that LGBT issues are in the same categories as race and civil rights issues. So, to say you shouldn’t have a queer couple on Sesame Street is the equivalent of saying you shouldn’t own a black couple on Sesame Street.”

Honestly, I’m devastated. Any longtime reader of Latest Relics knows I have loved VeggieTales since I was a child, and have recently given lots of reflection about how they got human hair like that

Here’s what happened. At the beginning of each month, the VeggieTales Twitter account wishes everyone born that month a content birthday. This month, June, was fronted by Larry the cucumber dressed as Larry-Boy. I’ve written about him entity queer-coded before, so I did what any respectful VeggieTales-loving, gay Christian would do: I wished him a gleeful Pride Month.

A parody VeggieTales account liked the tweet, and I tweeted pretending like the official account had responded positively (because you can’t tell what’s real on Twitter anymore and I’ve decided to lean in).

Then yesterday, I was checking the reaction to some of my wedding and honeymoon content, and noticed my quote tweet to Larry was broken… did they possess another viral tweet meltdown? Did they suddenly

VeggieTales creator and Holy Publish podcast host Phil Vischer has gotten beat up on social media over the last few days, and with good reason. The shots have been coming after he criticized a conservative TV network for not featuring LBGTQ characters in films, then compared christians who oppose legal homosexual marriage to ‘confederate theologians’, using his best smarmy voice to castigate those he disagrees with.

This is on top of knocking creationists as a bunch of dummies, crediting his white privilege for the success of his show, claiming he didn’t comprehend there were such things black Christians until he was an adult, thumbing his nose at “Cracker Barrel Christians,” getting upset at Christians for opposing LGBTQ, and coming out as pro-choice, has a burr in his saddle.

But Vischer took exception to the criticism he received about same-sex marriage, pushing back on claims that he has an unbiblical or unscriptural view of homosexuality and same-sex marriage. I told myself I would not speak of this cartoon again for at least a month, but something has happened I can’t gloss over. You may remember when I wrote about how Christian pop punk band Relient K are going on tour, and lgbtq+ Christian artist Semler is opening all their shows. Well, the tour has started, and it's going basically exactly as I’d hoped - and caused a lot of VeggieTales discourse.
