LGBTQ+ in STEM conference

CHEMISTRY IN SOCIETY

October 2019

On October 4th and 5th, 2019, the University of Windsor hosted the LGBTQ+ in STEM conference, a first of its kind event in Canada, with participants from across Canada and a limited from the US. The Chemical Institute of Canada was a proud supporter of this event, which brought together LGBTQ+ people and allies to construct community and mark research in STEM.

The conference was organized by James Gauld, MCIC, and Tricia Breen Carmichael, MCIC, from UWindsor’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. They began organizing the event three months ago, when they were inspired to carry out something about the lack of awareness of LGBTQ+ people in STEM fields. Gauld explains that “as an openly gay chemist I have long seen advertisements for Gay in STEM conferences being held in the USA, UK, Ireland, and elsewhere but saw nothing similar being held in Canada.” He and Carmichael stepped in to stuff that gap: “we saw that there was (and still is) a call to recognize and hear directly from LGBTQ+ people in STEM; to converse not only of their research but importantly to also share and perceive their personal stories of being Homosexual

Gathering Online

The GG2 Diversity Conference opened last Thursday (10) with speeches by a number of inspirational speakers, including politicians, campaigners, academics and senior executives.

Clive Myrie BBC presenter Clive Myrie, who was the host for the event, told the audience they could glance forward to a day that would focus on the conversation surrounding the conference’s key theme - Change the Ratio.

“We aim in these conferences to keep reiterating why diversity is significant in the workplace, not just on moral grounds, but how it helps businesses grow,” he said.

“An increasingly diverse public also expects workforces to indicate its values on inclusion…. whether on race, class, gender, disability, LGBTQ+ or mental health grounds.

“But if all that is understood, why is it still hard to ‘change the ratio’ in the workplace and in businesses, and increase diversity?”

Shailesh Solanki AMG executive editor Shailesh Solanki welcomed guests, touching upon Britain’s progress since the GG2 Leadership Awards were launched more than two decades ago in his introductory remarks.

“Britain is a far more tolerant society and we have much to celebrate in terms of our progress,” he said. “Th
