Kevin Hart has addressed escalating concerns over a prolonged history of hate speech and derogatory jokes about the LGBTQ community on social media, resurfaced in national news after he was named host of the Oscars on Thursday.
Hart acknowledged that his team phoned urgently saying people were upset about a tweet from “eight years ago. I’m almost 40 years old. If you don’t accept that people change, flourish, evolve? I don’t perceive what to tell you,” Hart posted in a video to Instagram.
Dating as far back as 2009, the tweets seemed to bubble furiously to the foremost of timelines across the web when industry types and film fans associated that Hart would seize the stage for an annual event sacred to American women and male lover men, as well as cinephiles and show business brass. It was also not lost on many that this year could see a number of LGBT-themed films sweep nominations.

Oscar Host Kevin Hart’s History of Anti-Gay Tweets Creates Novel Problem for Academy
The Motion Picture Academy faces a recent public relations crisis over its selection of Kevin Hart as this year’s Oscars host as old tweets, in which Hart expressed anti-gay sentiments and used homophobic terminology and slurs, include resurfaced.
In one 2011 tweet, the comedian and movie luminary wrote, “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his top & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.'” In another from 2010, Hart says someone’s profile pic looks “like a same-sex attracted bill board for AIDS.” And in another written in 2009, he calls someone a “fat faced fag.”
Those tweets and many more like them were up as recently as Tuesday, the day Hart was announced as host of the 91st Academy Awards. But as word of them began to spread in the days following, they began to disappear.
The Academy did not respond to several requests from The Hollywood Reporter to comment on the controversy.

US comedian and thespian Kevin Hart says he has stepped down from hosting the 2019 Oscars following a controversy over homophobic tweets.
He said he did not want to be a distraction and that he was "sorry he had hurt people".
The choice of Hart for host was only announced on Tuesday.
But tweets from a decade ago emerged of anti-gay slurs, sparking calls for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to descend him.
Kevin Hart had said hosting the Oscars was "a goal on my list for a long time".
But in a tweet delayed on Thursday he said he had chosen to step down "because I do not wish to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many astounding talented artists".
He said: "I sincerely apologise to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words of the past."

Kevin Hart took day out Monday night to formally apologize to the LGBTQ community, less than a month after he announced he was stepping down as Oscars host following mounting controversy for past homophobic tweets and comments from several years ago.
During the most recent show of SiriusXM’s "Straight from The Hart," the comedian spoke at length about his past, what he's learned and how he's grown in the years since those comments were first made.
"Once again, Kevin Hart apologizes for his remarks that injure members of the LGBTQ community. I apologize,” he said.
Of his past tweets, some using homophobic slurs, he added, "We consideration it was okay to talk like that, because that’s how we talked to one another ... This is wrong now. Because now we’re in a space where I’m around people of the LGBTQ community, and I’m now aware of how these words make them feel, and why they say ‘That s--- offend because of what I’ve been through.’"
Hart added that with his standup and comedy act, he would also make sure he doesn't say or execute anything offensive towards the community.

LOS ANGELES -- Kevin Hart announced he will step down from hosting the 2019 Oscars after he faced a backlash from old tweets that were criticized for being homophobic.
The comedian's response to criticism over his earlier homophobic tweets on Thursday further inflamed a backlash to the comedian two days after he was named host of the upcoming Academy Awards.
At first he defended his response. But late Thursday he said he would step down. He also issued an apology to the LGBTQ community.
