Perhaps the most critically-acclaimed elements within Shadowhunters have to perform with the multiple layers of representation on and off screen within the show. One of the most groundbreaking examples of this is the positive LGBTQ+ representation, which won the show a GLAAD Media Award for Exceptional Drama Series in 2017 and nominations in 2018 and 2019 due to its “fair, accurate, and inclusive representation.“
Shadowhunters has been heralded as a reveal that “broke new earth by prominently featuring homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, and asexual characters in healthy, loving, non-stereotyped roles.” That includes two of the show’s main characters, Magnus Bane (an openly bisexual warlock) and Alec Lightwood (a newly-out, gay Shadowhunter). Dom Sherwood is a British actor who is best established for his role as Jace Wayland in the Freeform fantasy series Shadowhunters. One of his co-stars is Matthew Daddario, who plays the openly same-sex attracted Alec Lightwood. Knowing this simple truth, one might suppose that a series which includes one of the most popular LGBTQ+ couples on TV right now would hold an educated and inclusive cast, right?
On Tuesday, Matthew was doing a Facebook livestream where he was answering questions and interacting with fans. Through the first few minutes, Matthew was quiet and enjoying himself, but the livestream was cut limited when Dom entered the trailer. As a viewer, you hear a short voice and then, clear as time, “Sup f*g.”
Matthew’s initial reaction was to put his hands near his smartphone and make a noise to notify Dom, but of course, he didn’t take the hint and continued talking. What he says is unclear, but Matthew is clearly shocked as he shouts, “Stop, stop!” When asked why he is entity so defensive, he replies, “Live.” And Dom’s reaction to knowing that he just said all of that while in the presence of hundreds of fans? He simply said, “What!”

*UPDATE: Alright, I mind I’d just revisit this now that they’ve genuinely made it right. 2×18 delivered Malec connection in a way I wasn’t certain we’d ever find . This doesn’t craft the mess up of 2×07 okay, but it does show that the people behind this show care. I’ve watched a lot of TV shows over my 24 years of existence, I’ve seen a lot of shows go downhill because they ignored the fans feelings and thoughts, and I’m pleased to notice that ‘Shadowhunters’ doesn’t look like it’s going to be one of those shows. Season 2b as a whole, not just in terms of Malec intimacy, has shown that they’ve listened to the fans and they’ve learned to be meticulous about their hyping of content. So basically if you’re reading this and not caught up on the exhibit, don’t feel discouraged it really does keep getting improved and better for Malec’s healthy portrayal.*

Matthew Daddario's Candid Thoughts On LGBTQ+ Representation In Shadowhunters - Exclusive
On what it's meant to Daddario to see how impactful Alec and Magnus have been to the series' Gay fans and doing voice right, he said, "We were very focused on trying to do that all right. We didn't know [what] exactly the right steps were, what we should portray, how we should portray [it]. But it became very apparent that very preliminary on, that was an extremely important element of what we were doing." After "The Mortal Instruments" film flopped years prior, that was many of the fandom's biggest interest as well.
"And I would say now that you're always nervous about it. You don't know, is this actually going to help you? It's one thing to do a service. Shadowhunters actor Dominic Sherwood says sorry for using lgbtq+ slur
Shadowhunters star Dominic Sherwood says he's "truly, truly sorry" for using a homophobic phrase.
He was heard in the background of a Facebook Dwell greeting his co-star, Matthew Daddario, with a queer slur.
Matthew, who plays a character who is queer in the show, told him to stop, telling him they were dwell talking to fans.
Dominic posted his apology on Instagram, describing his behaviour as "disgusting".
In the video, the actors said sorry for Dominic's words.
In the video, Dominic says he holds himself "fully accountable" and that he wasn't trying to "make excuses".
Shadowhunters is a teen supernatural drama available on Netflix in the UK.
