Self-esteem can lead to positive mental health outcomes but can be thwarted by negative messaging from peers, parents, school communities and social media. Nonbinary youth who experience stigmatization based on their gender identity are at greater risk for negative mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety and feelings of suicide. 

Giving adolescents and teens access to information and ideas about gender diversity can help them build a positive self-image and manage to positive mental health outcomes throughout their adulthood.

Understanding Gender Identity and Self-Image 

Language can be a forceful way to help fresh people feel empowered and seen. Using affirming language when addressing or discussing gender with young people starts with knowing a variety of gender-related vocabulary terms and what they mean.

Gender Diverse Vocabulary to Know:

Agender: when a person doesn’t identify with any gender.

Gender dysphoria: the feeling of confusion or frustration a person experiences when they feel conflict between their gender and the sex they were assigned at birth.

Research on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People

The Trevor Project is the leading organization providing crisis support and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth. In their 2024 U.S. National Survey, they display the experiences of over 18,000 LGBTQ+ young people across the United States.

According to the results of the survey, many Queer young people face bullying, discrimination, and challenges in getting mental health look after. These struggles are linked to a higher uncertainty of suicide.

The survey also offers strategies for supporting LGBTQ+ youth while emoting the importance of protected and accepting communities.

Understanding the Research

The Trevor Project did a survey to absorb about the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people in the U.S. The survey was checked and approved by experts to make sure it was done the right way.

From September to December 2023, they asked young people ages 13 to 24 to take the survey online. They found participants by posting ads on social media.
