World Cup 2022: France captain Lloris will not wear anti-discrimination armband
Hugo Lloris has said he will not attach the captains of 10 other European nations in wearing the OneLove heart, saying he wants to 'show respect' to host nation Qatar.
France captain Hugo Lloris has confirmed that he will not connect other European national team captains in wearing an anti-discrimination armband during the World Cup in Qatar.
Lloris had previously refused to state if he would participate in the initiative to endorse the season-long OneLove campaign to promote inclusion, which features an armband with a multi-colored heart. "I have been quite clear about this and I don't want to add anything else," Lloris said in an interview with news agency Agence France-Presse.
He said he wanted to "show respect" to host nation Qatar, whose treatment of migrant workers as skillfully as women and the LGBTQ collective have come under the spotlight in the build-up to the tournament. FRANCE SKIPPER Hugo Lloris has confirmed that he will not join other European national team captains in wearing an anti-discrimination armband during the World Cup in Qatar.
Lloris had previously refused to say if he would participate in the initiative to aid the season-long OneLove campaign to promote inclusion, which features an armband with a multi-coloured heart.
“I own been quite clear about this and I don’t want to add anything else,” Lloris said in an interview with AFP.
He said he wanted to “show respect” to host nation Qatar, whose treatment of migrant workers as skillfully as women and the LGBTQ community have reach under the spotlight in the build-up to the tournament.
“When we welcome foreign visitors to France we often would like them to respect our rules and our culture. I will do the matching when I go to Qatar,” he said.
His comments echoed those made by French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet, who has opposed the initiative.

I didn’t want to write this article. I rarely execute when it’s about something that a Tottenham Hotspur player has done that feels wrong, or icky. But I promised readers that I’d shine a light on aspects of the Earth Cup that otherwise don’t get the coverage it deserves, even when it’s distasteful, so we need to discuss about it.
On Monday, Hugo Lloris spoke as part of a press conference as captain of France ahead of the World Cup in Qatar. In that press conference, he was asked a question about whether he would wear a rainbow armband as captain, a gesture that would serve as a (very) petite token in assist for LBGTQ+ individuals during the Earth Cup. Homosexuality and queer culture is criminalized in Qatar, just one of the many reasons why the Earth Cup should never have been awarded to the Middle Eastern country to begin with. FIFA doesn’t allow unusual armband designs in their tournament, so wearing one would also be a (again, very small) middle finger to the governing body.
Hugo’s response... wasn’t great.
“Before we start anything, we need the agreement of Fifa, the agreement of the [French] federation. Of course, I have my personal opinion on the topic. And it’s quite close to
France captain Hugo Lloris hints that he WON'T wear rainbow-coloured armband at the World Cup... as goalkeeper insists he must 'respect Qatari culture' and claims there is 'too much pressure' on stars to highlight issues in host nation
France captain Hugo Lloris has heavily hinted that he will not be wearing a rainbow armband to campaign against discrimination at the World Cup in Qatar.
The rainbow colours are associated with the LGBTQ+ community, a section of society brutally subjugated by the host nation.
But the goalkeeper said: 'Before we start anything, we need the agreement of FIFA, the agreement of the [French] federation.
'Of course, I have my personal opinion on the topic. And it’s quite block to the [French federation] president’s.'
Noël Le Graët, president of the French FA, previously said he would prefer players not wear it so as to respect local beliefs and customs.
Lloris added: 'When we are in France, when we welcome foreigners, we often want them to follow our rules, to respect our culture, and I will do the same when I move to Qatar, quite simply.
'I can agree or oppose with their ideas, but I have to display respect.'

Captain of the French National Soccer team Hugo Lloris is on the fence about showing his encourage for the LGBTQ+ group during the World Cup in Qatar.
The small nation has drawn ire worldwide with its harsh policies toward alcohol, women’s rights, and same-sex unions. While ten countries’ captains and counting have agreed to demonstrate support for the Homosexual community, the thirty-five-year-old keeper would expect visitors of his land to respect France’s laws if visiting.
Ever since the then-current Fifa President Sepp Blatter announced Qatar as the 2o22 host nation, the Connecticut-sized-country has been inundated with accusations of human rights violations against their migrant workers–of which build up almost 90% of the population of Qatar–to the not-so-secret rampant corruption of FIFA.
While Loris sounds polite, he may be forgetting that as recently as September, gay and lesbian individuals were targeted for arrest and mistreatment in detention centers based solely on their sexual orientation, according to a report from Human Rights Watch.
Some fans were fast to point out the obvious to Hugo:
While others came to the captain’s defense:
