The shine is coming off the new Dutch government before it has even startedMore than seven months after the initiate of negotiations, a new Dutch government is likely to be finally sworn in by King Willem-Alexander on 2nd July. The negotiations followed the spectacular win of the right-wing PVV party led by Geert Wilders in the November 22nd General Election, where they got a quarter of the votes and replaced the liberal VVD of Prime Minister Tag Rutte as the biggest party. PVV was some distance ahead of the Labour-Green alliance headed by former European Commissioner Frans Timmermans in second place (just ahead of VVD in third place). New VVD-leader Dilan Yesilgöz had hoped to remain ahead in the polls by stating that PVV voters should be taken seriously. This blew up right in her face favor an exploding trick cigar. It only had the impact of making the PVV more acceptable. Wilders shot up in the polls not even two weeks before the elections, much to his own surprise.
Wilders handled his election victory cleverly, “mothballing” his most controversial plans and appearing as nice as he could, earning himself the nickname Geert Milders. Wilders can do this easily
From Pim Fortuyn to Geert Wilders & the PVV – Pro-gay and anti-Islam: rise of the Dutch far-Right
The Dutch far-right has evolved into one of the most thriving national movements in Europe. Its commander Geert Wilders is a major political figure with international support. In many ways Wilders is the heir of Pim Fortuyn, a politician who played a crucial role in shaping a new right-wing current, ‘national-populism’, in Dutch politics, and who was murdered in 2002.
Populism here means the idea that society is separated in two camps; the ‘good people’ versus a ‘corrupt elite’. The ‘people’ are not the whole of world, but the part of the community that is considered pure and whose political will is considered legitimate: it is a partial object that stands in for the whole. Who is part of the ‘people’ is not given, the borders of this category are contested. The selection of those considered part of it and who are not is a political act.
Different kinds of populism use different criteria to select and shape ‘the people’ into political actors. In national-populism, the ‘people’ and the nation tend to overlap: the nation is not matching to the citizenry but to the ‘
Protect LGBTIQ people in the Netherlands from "conversion th
On Feb. 14, 2022, a bill was introduced in the Netherlands to prohibit "conversion therapy". Such "therapy" is a set of harmful, dangerous and pseudo-medical practices aimed at "curing" homosexuality. This bill must be passed as soon as possible in 2022.
According to a study submitted to the Dutch Parliament, there are 15 organizations in the Netherlands that offer "conversion therapy" services. "Conversion therapy" is a set of harmful, mentally and physically dangerous, useless and pseudo-medical practices aimed at "cure" homosexuality, bisexuality or transgender. Such a "cure" is impossible, since no sexual orientation or gender identity is a disease, they are all varieties of biological and moral norms. The practices used in such "cure" are notoriously useless and fraudulent, as well as harmful to the mental and physical health of LGBTQ people, especially childish people who may be coerced into such "treatment" by their parents. It is incredibly terrible and disgusting that in the Netherlands, one of the most developed and liberal countries, such medieval things still exist.
