As classes resume, a modern Tennessee law requires schools to out transgender students
It’s the first new school year since Tennessee passed a law requiring schools to out transgender students to their parents. Gov. Bill Lee signed the measure into law in May.
Critics say the law puts trans youth at peril of rejection, while proponents say parents have a right to know if their children ask to go by other names or pronouns at college. In recent years, Tennessee has passed other laws prohibiting trans youth from using the school bathroom or playing on the sports team that aligns with their gender identity.
DuPont Hadley Middle School Leading Kevin Armstrong has navigated some of these sensitive conversations with students and parents.
“I think, for us, it’s just about being transparent,” Armstrong said.
That starts with letting students know that the institution will be contacting their parents.
“But we’re … not just going to pluck up the phone, narrate the parent, hang up,” Armstrong said.

NASHVILLE, TN — In a truly stunning exhibit of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and targeted misuse of government power, Tennessee lawmakers last week sent to the governor THREE new pieces of legislation targeting the rights and existence of the LGBTQ+ community and has continued working on harmful bills this week. Last week’s newly passed bills, if signed into law, would further extend Tennessee’s shameful, shocking lead among U.S. states in enacting anti-LGBTQ+ laws since 2015:
