Stances of Faiths on LGBTQ+ Issues: Islam - Sunni and Shi'a

BACKGROUND

With over a billion followers, Islam is the second largest religion in the world, and noted for its diversity of culture and ethnicity. Founded by the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in 622 CE, Islam is an Abrahamic religion that shares its roots with Judaism and Christianity and recognizes Abraham, Moses and Jesus as prophets. Its solemn texts are the Qur’an, and secondary sources are start in cultural practices such as Sunnah and less so in Hadith, which continue to be studied and interpreted by both scholars and the constant. At the core of Islam is the Shahadah, a declaration of faith that states, "There is no god but God, and later adaptations added “and Muhammad is the messenger of God." The Shahadah is one of the Five Pillars of Islam that also include charitable giving, fasting, praying several times each day, and going on pilgrimage to Mecca, if economically feasible, at least once in a lifetime.

Because Islam has no central governing body, it is not possible to state clear policies regarding issues of interest to Homosexual people. Depending on nationality, generation, family upbr

Dealing With Homosexual Urges: Yasir Qadhi to Muslim Student

The following article is an edited transcription of a response that Sh. Yasir Qadhi gave to a question posed to him.

Q: Shaykh, I have unnatural urges and feel attracted to members of the same gender. I don’t know what to execute about this, can you please give me some advice.

A:
Bismillah, alhamdulillah, wa-l-salaat wa-l-salaam ala Rasulillah

I was actually asked the alike question in Toronto, a few weeks ago. And while this is a very disturbing question to some people, it is something that needs to be mentioned and discussed publicly.

It is possible that some people have urges that are considered abnormal by others. Sometimes, from a religious perspective these urges would indeed be classified as abnormal. But simply having such urges does not justify acting upon them.

The short answer is – absolutely yes.

You can be gay and Muslim.

Being gay and Muslim is a reality for many people around the world.

It’s essential to understand that gay individuals are born the way that they are. It is our society that punishes gay individuals for being born the way they were born. This is often due to fear, misinformation and poor understanding of the spectrum of identities that occur within the human species.

But navigating faith and sexuality can be complex.

For many, naming as both same-sex attracted and Muslim poses profound challenges. This intersection of persona often brings individuals face to tackle with conflicting views and societal expectations. Yet, it’s a reality for thousands worldwide, deserving of attention and respect.

Islam’s vast interpretations propose diverse perspectives on homosexuality. While some views remain conservative, a shift towards more inclusive understandings of faith is emerging. Stories of acceptance and resilience within the Muslim LGBTQ+ community showcase this gradual transform, offering hope and solidarity to those at the crossroads of faith and sexual identity.

These narratives underscore th

Can a Muslim be gay?

Can a Muslim be queer – or accepting of a fellow Muslim who’s gay?

Ever since the landmark US Supreme Court decision on June 26 making same-sex marriage legal in the US, debate has emerged among Muslims worldwide about the merit of the ruling, with the obvious implication if they as Muslims authorize or disapprove of a person being a lgbtq+ while professing to be a Muslim.

“When the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday legalised same-sex marriages in all 50 states,” one commentatorwrotejubilantly, “many American-Muslims were thrilled with the news. For these Muslims, their own religion [sic] convictions support their views on gay marriage and accept that God’s compassion trumps all.”

“But many Muslims on social media lashed out,” anothercautioned, “saying ‘qiyamah’, the time of judgement, was nearby while the story of Lot condemning homosexuality in holy scriptures, including the Quran, is being ignored.”

Firstly:

Homosexuality is a severe illness and a grave calamity. If it is accompanied by actually committing immoral actions, then it is even worse, because of the sin and abhorrent nature of those immoral actions and their poor consequences in this earth and in the Hereafter.

Hence you should focus on how to treat this perversion and save yourself from this destructive wicked, more than focusing on whether to conceal it from your fiancée or disclose it to her.

You should realize that there are causes for this calamity, and these causes may be due to what the person affected has done. The one who wants to spare himself from this situation should examine these causes and rid himself of them, and do what we advise, otherwise he is approving of and accepting his condition and he does not need to change for the better. Among the causes which may be due to his own efforts are the following:

1.

Weakness of faith and remoteness of the heart from like of Allah, and a lack of fear of His punishment.

2.

Looking freely at beardless youths, and enjoying their beauty and form.

This is the first step towards sin for those who are affect
