Yesterday, as part of a slate of executive orders signed by President Biden on his first day in office, he issued an “Executive Request on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation.” It is now the policy of this administration that “[e]very person should be treated with respect and dignity and should be fit to live without fear, no matter who they are or whom they love.”

E., a 21-year-old in Oregon, has only been open about her gender identity with loved ones for less than a year. Yet as she navigates her animation as a newly out and proud transgender girl, she is feeling more uneasy than ever. Since Donald Trump’s reelection, she and her girlfriend, who is also transgender, contain each been racing to update their identity documents. And while they’ve been successful with their birth certificates, driver’s licenses, and Social Security cards, there’s one that’s still outstanding: E.’s passport.

Although she and her girlfriend paid to have their passport applications expedited, weather delays caused them to reach their destination later than expected. E.’s girlfriend’s new document was approved on Jan. 22, the day before Trump’s State Department took steps to stop gender nonconforming, nonbinary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming Americans from obtaining passports that properly match their identities. New York, NY (January 22, 2025) — Accompanying President Trump’s inauguration on Monday, he issued a slate of executive orders, some of which target immigrants and their families and effectively block all pathways to security in the Combined States for LGBTQ people fleeing persecution worldwide. Black LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Group Reacts to President Biden’s Executive Command Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality

WASHINGTON, DC — Moments ago, President Biden signed a historic executive order advancing Queer equality during Pride month. 

The order addresses discriminatory express and local legislative attacks against LGBTQI+ children and families by directing key agencies to protect families and children; prevents so-called “conversion therapy” with a historic initiative to guard children from the harmful practice; safeguards health look after and programs designed to prevent youth suicide; and supports LGBTQI+ children by launching new initiatives to protect foster youth, avoid homelessness, and improve access to federal programs.

President Biden Issues Most Substantive, Wide-Ranging LGBTQ Executive Order In U.S. History

Today, the Human Rights Campaign responded to the release of an executive order that implements the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in the consolidated cases Bostock v. Clayton County, Altitude Convey v. Zarda and R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC.
